Most New Jersey residents will never forget where they were when Hurricane Sandy rocked the Garden State with unprecedented force last month.
Newark native and Roosevelt resident Steve Trevelise was exactly where he wanted to be when Sandy ravaged his beloved home state.
The evening host (7 to 11 p.m., Monday through Thursday) of New Jersey 101.5 FM (WKXW) was on the air reporting about the effects of “the Frankenstorm” and taking calls from fellow Garden Staters dealing with the effects of the historic system.

“I felt like Walter Cronkite,” says Trevelise. “Most outlets were focusing on what was happening in New York. But people tuned in to our station because we are New Jersey. I had the privilege of letting people know what was happening and it was wonderful interacting with those that were calling in.”
The animated Trevelise clearly enjoyed visiting with an eclectic group of listeners from throughout the state during an extraordinary night.
Then again, he has a blast holding court during ordinary evenings as well.

“This is the best radio job I ever had,” says Trevelise. “It’s a dream job since what I do is akin to what I did while growing up in Union City on the stoop. I shoot the breeze. I sit out there and talk with whomever wants to talk with me. Anyone can come out and listen.”
The topics Trevelise brings to the table range from best candy bar jingles to what New Jersey resident would you most like to meet.
“People in New Jersey love Bruce Springsteen,” Trevelise says. “That’s no surprise. But then you had to tune in to hear who else they want to meet. I try to have some fun, talk about music, do some comedy.”

“I’ve known Trev for almost 30 years and the thing about him is that he has this tremendous work ethic,” New Jersey 101.5 brand director Eric Johnson says.
“Steve oozes Jersey culture. He’s a (New York) Giants fan. The people love him. He’s doubled the ratings at night at the station. He’s been great.”

Comedy has been a big part of Trevelise’s life. He’s been a stand-up comic for the last generation and he is the owner and general manager of Sarcasm Comedy Club, which on Saturday features its comedy competition with headliner Billy Terrell at two shows.
“It’s a wonderful thing to own a club and also to be able to get out there and perform,” says Trevelise. “It’s a great time. We’ll have celebrity judges come out. We’ll have icons like Robert Klein and Uncle Floyd play the club. And we’re going to present the unpredictable Gilbert Gottfried at Pitman’s Broadway Theater in February.”

Sarcasm also hosts a comedy class. Alums such as former Philadelphia Eagle Garry Cobb, wrestling legend King Kong Bundy and Eric Potts have cut their comedic teeth there. The latter has earned the MC gig at Sarcasm and will introduce Gottfried when he returns to South Jersey in February.

“I think we have a little something for everyone,” says Trevelise. “If you want to learn how to become a comic, come on out. If you want to just laugh and forget about everything, come on out.”

Trevelise, who owns a shore house in Sea Isle City, is a dynamo. Aside from working the night shift at New Jersey 101.5 and toiling at his club in Cherry Hill, he does the weekend overnight shifts and weekday updates at WIP.
“It helps when you love what you do,” he says. “I enjoy what I do at WIP. I’m used to doing what I do there. It’s great there. It’s great to be at New Jersey 101.5 and I love what I do at Sarcasm.

“The wonderful thing is that I get to do what I love and how many people get to say that? I believe that I’m in a unique situation. I’m incredibly fortunate.”
Steve Trevelise’s Sarcasm Comedy Club features its comedy competition with Billy Terrell headlining at 7:30 and 9:30 p.m. Saturday at the venue at the Crowne Plaza Hotel at 2349 W. Marlton Pike/Route 70 East in Cherry Hill. Tickets: $20. Information: 856-382-6253.

Trevelise, who is a popular Philadelphia and NJ Radio personality, said “Eric took the comedy class that I ran, along with Jimmy Graham, at Catch a Rising Star in Princeton, and excelled quickly at comedy”. The comedy class teaches the basics of comedy along with the business side and marketing of comedy. ‘Eric brings a wealth of knowledge with him beyond what he’s learned over the past few years on the comedy circuit”, said Trevelise. “He has been a police officer in NJ for over 20 years and has fantastic people skills as well as a tremendous drive to succeed.”

Potts, who lives in Ewing, NJ, said “I’m excited about the opportunity to work closely with Steve and help build Sarcasm Comedy Club into a National name, the level of entertainment Steve is able to bring to the area is unbelievable and I am using the opportunity to learn from one of the best promoters in the business”.

“In a short amount of time Eric has gone from student to feature in area clubs and he is a perfect fit to manage and be house Emcee of Sarcasm Comedy Club”, Trevelise added.

Eric has performed at Catch a Rising Star, LOL Comedy Club, Helium Comedy Club, The Stress Factory, Sarcasm Comedy Club, and Parx Casino just to name a few. He is the winner of the 2011 Sarcasm Comedy Club competition and has opened for Gilbert Gottfried, Joe Matarese, Roundboy Jimmy Graham, Joseph Anthony, Vic DiBitetto and Uncle Floyd.

Sarcasm is a form of wit that is intended to make its victim the target of contempt or ridicule.
And that is exactly what Steve Trevelise was hinting at when he used the word in the name of his new club, Sarcasm Comedy Club in Cherry Hill.
“I think sarcasm not only best describes my personlity, but is the best way for us to look at the world,” Trevelise said. “Comedy is where we look at the world right in the eye and laugh in its face. Right now, we’ve never needed it more.”
Trevelise, who has aired on Philadelphia radio for 25 years, began his career reading updates on “The Howard Stern Show.”
“Now I work on WIP with Howard Eskin,” he said. “ I started performing stand-up comedy in (2000) and have opened for Robert Klein, Gabe Kaplan, Pat Cooper and the late Richard Jeni.”
Trevelise has performed at The Borgata in Atlantic City and has been the emcee and general manager of Catch a Rising Star in Princeton for the last five years. Catch a Rising Star, a comedy club tradition which got its start in 1972 in New York City, has five clubs all over the country including the one in Princeton.
The grand opening for his latest project, Sarcasm Comedy Club, was on Jan. 16 and he has been hosting stand-up shows every Friday night at 8:30 p.m. and Saturday night at 7:30 and 10 p.m. since opening night.

“I love it when there’s a packed house and they are laughing at everything you’re saying,” he said. “There’s no greater feeling in the world.”
In an effort to share that feeling with others, Trevelise is hosting the Comedy School at the Broadway Theater in Pitman beginning March 17 and running for six weeks.

Students will perform on stage at the theater and learn everything from writing a joke to opening a club from Trevelise and headlining comedian and actor Jimmy “Roundboy” Graham.
“I’m constantly being asked by people who come to the club how to get started,” Trevelise said. “What better place to learn then the place that has launched so many careers.”
Trevelise and Graham also taught this class at Catch a Rising Star in Sea Isle City and have produced graduates such as Flyers’ Hall of Famer Dave Shultz and wrestling great King Kong Bundy.
Most of the comedy shows presented at the Sarcasm Comedy Club are rated PG or R.
“I get veteran comics who have performed all over the country,” he said. Some upcoming guests include Dennis Malloy from New Jersey 101.5, Joe Matarese who had his own Comedy Central special, Joe Conklin and Big Daddy Graham, Shultz, Bundy and former Eagles linebacker Garry “G” Cobb.
“If you’ve been doing comedy a long time and you’re good at it, it would make sense that you would have been on Comedy Central, HBO or late-night television and my comics have been,” Trevelise said proudly.
On March 5, Geno Bisconte, a Vineland native, will perform at the club.
“He is one of the fastest rising comics in New York,” he said. “You may have seen him on the Fox Redeye or heard him on the Kidd Chris show, WIP’s Steve Trevelise show or Sirius satellite radio.”
Bisconte said he always looks forward to getting back to the South Jersey area.
“Laughter heals people from the inside,” he said. “I’m very edgy. I talk about race, religion and even cancer. We are a spoiled country and we look for things to be offended about. Until we learn to let that go, we’ll just sit around and worry.”
He believes the country has turned into a bunch of people who say the right thing just so they can act inappropriately.
“I want you to laugh when you don’t want to,” he said.
Bisconte, now a resident of Brooklyn, is excited to be playing at the Sarcasm Comedy Club.
“People should come support Sarcasm because there’s no real, good comedy clubs in the area right now,” he said. “There’s nothing like seeing a live comedy show, and comics want to play for as many people as they can.”
Trevelise said visitors can always expect A-list comedy at B-list prices at Sarcasm.
“At $18 a ticket, you’ll never find a better deal for a night out,” he said. “Comedy is a one- on-one experience, and at Sarcasm, we make sure you’re satisfied from the moment you walk in to the time you exit.”
In addition to hosting comedy shows at Sarcasm two nights a week, Trevelise is also planning a show in Pitman.
Trevelise and three other comedians will present the “What Are YOU Laughing At” comedy show at The Broadway Theater of Pitman on Saturday, Feb. 27 at 8 p.m.
Malloy, Graham and Uncle Floyd of Dr. Demento fame will join Trevelise for a stand-up extravaganza.

Take the Sarcasm Comedy Club’s beginners comedy class … please. OK, well Henny Youngman’s oft quoted “Take my wife…please” joke doesn’t really apply in this instance (well maybe it does if you really think about it), but for anyone who has ever fostered a desire to try their hand at standup comedy, maybe this course is for you.

I’ve always been fascinated with standup comedy. One of the earliest memories of standup I have is when Comedy Central debuted in the early ‘90s Jersey and I caught The Amazing Jonathan special (Lounge Lizards anyone) and became infatuated. People could actually do this for a living? Be filthy on stage, make fun of customers who bought tickets and still be beloved?

Sign me up.

The Sarcasm Comedy Club is one of the best-kept secrets in South Jersey. Housed in the Crowne Plaza in Cherry Hill, the club has some of the top headlining comics in the world, including Gilbert Gottfried, who performed at the club in late 2011.

The club also hosts popular local legends such as Philadephia Flyers great Dave “The Hammer” Schultz and wrestling legend turned standup comic King Kong Bundy.

The man behind club?

You wouldn’t necessarily relate him to the comic game, but he’s got the chops to stand up with the best of them.

Steve Trevelise, current radio personality on both 94.1 WIP and NJ 101.5 FM, owns and operates Sarcasm, using his decades of comedic experience to turn the club into a premier site for comics in South Jersey.

“I love comedy and Cherry Hill is really a great location for a club. I’ve been on the radio in Philly forever. I started doing comedy back in the ‘80s and I would do updates on the Howard Stern show when he was on WYSP,” Trevelise said. “I started getting into the comedy business – and I hosted shows at Comedy Works. This is during the comedy boom during the ‘80s. I even brought Bill Hicks on stage when we performed at The Funny Bone.”

In 2004, Trevelise participated in “Catch a Rising Star” at the Princeton Hyatt and impressed the brass so much that he was offered the role of house emcee just several weeks later. It was here, he said, where he learned the inner workings of a comedy club and the idea to open his own comedy club began to grow.

Besides, when you perform 250 comedy dates a year, you tend to pick up on what makes a successful club and what doesn’t.

“I was there every week, I had tons of stage time and simply through doing that, I became general manager. I learned the inner workings of a comedy club,” he said. “I was doing 250 shows a year. That’s a lot of stage time. The next natural progression was to open my own club. It’s the perfect size, it’s big enough to get the big acts and it’s a great area.”

Now, Trevelise wants to share his comedic experience with interested “stand ups” in South Jersey. Sarcasm will be offering a “Sarcasm Comedy Class” beginning on Saturday, Jan. 21 at 4 p.m.

The four-week class will teach prospective comedians how to craft material, write a set, deliver jokes, deal with hecklers and market themselves as comedians.

The class will culminate with each student performing during a Sarcasm Comedy Club show on Saturday, Feb. 11.

“It teaches you how to find your funny. We find what’s inside of you, what your views are and how you look at the world. There are so many things in your life that are funny that you don’t even know about. We work with you, find what’s most comfortable, and we find what’s inside of you that’s not inside of anyone else and we bring it to the surface,” he said. “Crowds and fans can sense the honesty in you. That’s how other people will buy into it. Crowds can sense that. There’s no better high than being on the comedy stage and having the room go crazy.”

The class isn’t just useful for those interested in a stand up career, Trevelise said. Comedians know how to handle a room, they know how to project themselves and immediately become the focal point of a conversation, he said.

“A sense of humor is one of the most valuable assets you can have in what you do. In work, public speaking, sales, a sense of humor can take you a long way. We have attorneys that take our course. It helps them better address the juries. We have a lot of sales people that take the class and better learn how to think on their feet,” he said. “You can control a room with comedy. A guy that walks into a room and starts cracking jokes – they get the attention. There are so many things out there that can scare you. The bully is not going to bully a guy that can humiliate them in front of a crowd. If you cut the bully to the core comically, you become king of the hill. I’d love to teach kids comedy … how to have fun with it.”

For $300, the four-week class will teach you all of these traits, provide you a DVD copy of your final performance and give you a professional 8-by-10 headshot for your future career in comedy.

Want to sign up? Have questions? Either visit the Sarcasm Comedy Club at www.sarcasmcomedy.com or call at (856) 382-6253.

Don’t want to take the class yourself? Read my week-by-week running series of the class and check out my final performance after Feb. 11.
